Brooxie’s Chamber Notes 12.4.12

Chamber Tuesday!  It was a good one as always.  Today we heard from Wasilla’s Chief of Police, Gene Belden.  He shared with us several coffee stands and smaller Wasilla businesses have been broken into  recently.  Although some of these businesses have video surveillance it can still be a challenge to catch these perpetrators with video given the winter weather clothing they are wearing (large bulky jackets and stocking hats pulled low on the forehead).  He recommended alarm systems as well as making sure your windows are clear of holiday decorations and anything else that may be blocking the view from the outside in.  This is to help patrol cars that may be driving by.

Our other speaker was Cheri LeBlanc-Shu from the United Way of Mat-Su.  A great organization to be involved with if you are trying to find a way to give back to the community.  A couple of examples of organizations they partner with:

Homeless ConnectMat-Su Coalition on Housing and Homelessness – they are currently looking for volunteers for Homeless Connect 2013.  Devon and I volunteered last year – it’s a very rewarding experience helping people connect with the services they need!

Mat-Su Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition

Early Childhood Partnership of Mat-Su

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program

and Alaska 211 – This was new to me. 2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember telephone number that connects callers, at no cost, to information about critical health and human services available in communities around Alaska.
